JLLV Awards Inaugural ‘Women in S.T.E.M.’ Scholarships

The Junior League of the Lehigh Valley (JLLV) in conjunction with Azzur Labs has announced the winners of its inaugural annual Women in S.T.E.M. Scholarships. The scholarships were awarded to two graduating female seniors who reside in either Lehigh or Northampton counties and intend to pursue S.T.E.M. degrees. One of the two scholarships was specifically awarded to a student who is the first in their family to attend college.

An announcement about the inaugural scholarship opportunities and its application were sent to all Lehigh and Northampton County high schools as well as other select local organizations. JLLV received fifteen applications in this first year. Each applicant was evaluated on their accomplishments in their studies and in their community with a focus on leadership and impact.

Of the fifteen applicants, five finalists were chosen to participate in in-person interviews with a JLLV  Active Member. Following these interviews, Brianna Peters and Megan Forst were chosen as the scholarships first recipients. Ms. Peters, the first in her family to attend college,  will attend Penn State University Lehigh Campus in fall 2019, and will study Engineering. Ms. Forst will attend Hofstra University also in the fall 2019, and pursue a degree in BioMedical Engineering.

Both Ms. Forst and Ms. Peters, plus select guests, joined JLLV Members at their May 2019 General Membership Meeting to be presented with their awards.

Applications for the 2020 Scholarship awards will be available starting in October and will again be provided to all Lehigh and Northampton County High Schools. Applications will be due by early December for consideration.
