Saturday, October 9, 2010 Now in the sixth year, the Junior League of The Lehigh Valley will host Kids in the Kitchen, an educational initiative on childhood obesity and nutrition created by the Association of Junior Leagues International.
The FREE event, is open to kids ages 7-12. Click HERE to register Golfing & Grilling Fall 2010: A fun-filled day of hands-on activities will introduce kids to the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. Chef Bert, head Chef at Brew Works on the Green, will lead a hands-on preparation and tasting of several simple recipes along with training in the importance of grilling, kitchen safety and hygiene. The delicious and nutritious food will be provided by Wegman’s of Lehigh Valley. Nutritionist,Tara Miltenberger, RD, LDN a Community Educator with the Allen Center for Nutrition at Cedar Crest College will bring interactive, state-of-the-art health and wellness education to the children. Allentown Municipal’s own Golf Pro, Jeff Wambold, will facilitate the fitness part of the morning teaching the kids that Golfing can be a fun and exciting exercise. Our resident Gardner, Earl Blankenbiller will introduce the children to the benefits of container gardening, as well as, create a starter garden.
Designed to help raise awareness and help reverse the growth of childhood obesity and its associated health issues, Kids in the Kitchen will bring together organizations from across the Lehigh Valley which are committed to addressing childhood obesity. Nearly two-thirds of children and adolescents in North and South America will be overweight by 2011 and at increased risk of contracting Type II diabetes, high blood pressure, the numerous ailments related to high cholesterol and social problems that affect self-esteem.
